7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.
Psalm 20:7
Some people place their trust in the machinery of this world. Those that put their trust in the stock market, the government, social programs etc. are guilty I feel of trusting in “chariots” and “horses.” I think that the people the Psalmist spoke of were putting their trust and security in military might. Even though David was a mighty military hero who had led many armies to victory, he realized that true strength isn’t in the number of horses, chariots, or men that an army has. True strength comes from the power of God’s blessing. I think that David probably learned this when he faced Goliath. Of all people, David himself had to know that his victory over Goliath had nothing to do with human strength, it was all God.
I think that a real understanding of this passage will change my life in at least two ways: First I will not put so much trust in human emotion, strategies, and plans. I will learn to trust God completely. Secondly, I think that this passage will inspire me that with God at my side, I can take on bigger giants than ever, because the strength is in Him, not me!
Lord, help me today to recognize Your great strength. It’s an important thing to recognize my own weakness and I certainly do. But Lord, help me to at the same time acknowledge Your mighty power! Help me to slay the giants that you have put me here to slay!
