Journal April 28, 2009

1 Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David. But David grew stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker. 2 Samuel 3:1

There was great division within the kingdom during these times. It wasn’t clear who the real leader was. During times when there is no clear leader, chaos reigns. That seems to have been the state of Israel at this time. It was obvious to nearly everyone that God had raised up David to lead the nation. But Saul was still clinging to power. How sad it is to be clinging to power when God has moved on.

I also see that during this time God allowed Saul’s house and Saul’s influence to weaken. During the same time David’s influence was growing. It seems to me that God causes this with those whom He blesses. When God’s hand of blessing is upon us, our influence for His kingdom grows. When it leaves, our kingdom potential begins to wane.

Rather that strategizing about everything and pressuring myself to be the perfect leader, I will simply strive to live the kind of life that God’s hand will rest upon. If His hand is with me, I can expect to influence other’s for Him.

Lord, I pray today that you will first of all purify my motives. Give me a pure heart in everything I do. Never allow me to desire influence or power merely for the sake of appearance or status. Let my heart’s desire be to build Your Kingdom and make You known.

As I do that Lord, I pray that Your hand of blessing might rest upon me. Cause my influence for You to grow in this city. May you help me to work to lead Hendersonville to Christ! That is my prayer today!
