Under-promise, Over-deliver

What a powerful lesson I've learned on this one.

"One of the biggest mistakes is to tell people what they want to hear, give them what they think they want, without thinking if it’s feasible for you. You overpromise results you can’t deliver without a lot of stress. And of course, if you don’t deliver, not only are you stressed, they are, too."

-Thomas Leonard (founder of Coach University, the first professional training center for life coaches)

This good habit starts before you make a commitment. It is so tempting to say yes at the moment you are asked to commit. It makes the conversation so much easier. But then a few minutes later you realize that you can't deliver all that you have promised. Then comes to pain of letting others down, feeling guilty, and carrying regret.

Here is what we should do. Don't commit immediately. Do as Jesus said, "count the cost!" See what this commitment is going to cost you and make sure you can pay. If you are not sure, then say exactly that. Let the person know that you will try your best, but cannot promise. Then if you show up, it's a bonus. If not, you haven't hurt your integrity.

As a confirmed over-promiser, I've gone to school on this one.
